CAPE TOWN SLEDDING
PUTTING ON A HARNESS
Harnesses transfer the power from the dog’s to the rig and should fit comfortably without restricting
movement. The Siberian uses an X-back harness. The collared neck fits snugly to keep any pressure off a
dog’s shoulder blades.

Most harnesses are made from nylon webbing
with fleece around the neck and down the
breastplate with a nylon loop at the back
for attaching to the tug line.

How to Put on A Harness
When putting on a harness (X-back harness):

1. Hold the dog between your legs.

2. Straighten out the harness.

3. Make sure the padding is on the inside.

4. Open the collar and the underarm straps
behind the C division at the lower end of
the breast strip.

5. You will be holding two pieces in each hand.

6. Now slip the combined collar/straps down
over the dog’s head.

7. Reach down and lift first one and then the
other foreleg over the unpadded underarm
straps which are lying across the dog’s shoulders.

8. Work the harness back along the dog’s body.

9. If the double centre strip ends up down the
dog’s back instead of down his chest, the
harness is upside down.

10. If the padding shows completely and is not partially covered by the webbing, the harness is inside out.
11. If the harness does not lie smoothly, check to make sure you have brought each leg through its proper
opening.
